7 Fun Indoor Activities to Keep Kids Moving When the Weather’s Bad
Rainy day? Too hot outside? Don’t let the weather stop your family from staying active! Indoor movement can be just as fun—and a great way to burn off energy while bonding together.
According to SNAP-Ed and Create Better Health, short bouts of movement throughout the day are just as effective as longer sessions for boosting health (Create Better Health).
Here are 7 easy, fun indoor activities that get kids moving:
- Make an obstacle course.
Use pillows, couch cushions, and chairs to build a safe course in your living room. - Join a virtual fitness class.
Stronger Texas offers free family-friendly classes you can do right from your home. They are friendly for all fitness levels! Try a Zumba, Yoga, Mixxed Fit and more! - Try freeze dance or musical movement games.
Great for younger kids and guaranteed to bring on giggles. - Set up movement relays.
Crawl like a bear, hop like a bunny, or march like a dinosaur across the hallway. - Do stair-step challenges.
Turn staircases into a movement zone with races or step counts. - Make a movement jar.
Fill a jar with activity ideas and let kids draw one when they feel bored. - Stretch it out.
Yoga or silly stretches before bed help kids wind down while still moving.
Even 10-15 minutes of indoor activity can make a big difference. Keep it light, fun, and consistent!
