5 Essential Summer Health Tips

Summer in Texas means longer days, warmer weather, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re heading to the pool, planning a weekend hike, or just soaking up sunshine with family and friends, it’s important to keep your health and safety top of mind.

Here are 5 essential ways to stay healthy, safe, and energized all season long.

1. Sun Safety Starts Here

Texas sunshine can be beautiful—and intense. Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. Try these science-backed tips from Create Better Health and other health leaders:

  • Cover up: Wear lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to shield your skin.
  • Apply sunscreen: Use SPF 30 or higher and apply it generously to all exposed areas.
  • Top it off: A wide-brimmed hat offers extra protection for your face, neck, and ears.
  • Protect your eyes: Choose sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Time your outings: Limit sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.
  • Reapply regularly: Refresh sunscreen every two hours—or more often if swimming or sweating
  • Time It Right: Avoid peak sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.
  • Reapply Often: Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours—or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Staying hydrated is one of the easiest ways to care for your body—especially in the Texas heat.

  • Keep a reusable water bottle with you and take small sips throughout the day.
  • Infuse your water with fruit slices like lemon, cucumber, or berries for extra flavor.
  • Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges for added hydration.

3. Water Safety 101

Heading to the pool or lake this summer? Keep your family safe with these water-wise reminders:

  • Always watch children closely when they’re in or near water—even if lifeguards are present.
  • Learn CPR and basic rescue techniques, especially if you’re a frequent swimmer or caregiver.
  • Use properly fitting life jackets when boating or swimming in open water.
  • Know your limits and never swim alone.
