How to Have a Healthy and Happy Halloween!

hh-horizontal2

Halloween is just around the corner, which means we’ll soon be inundated with more sugary sweets and treats than we’ll know what to do with. But Halloween doesn’t have to be all about candy. Here are some tips and ideas to keep your Halloween happy AND healthy!

Trick-or Treating Tips:

Ration candy consumption– Don’t let your kids, or yourself, gorge on candy while trick-or-treating. In the days that follow your night out, set aside a piece or two of the sweet stuff per day to enjoy. Try using a smaller bag when you go door to door if you’re worried about having too much candy around for months to come. This will limit the amount of candy you and your kids ultimately end up with.

Fill up on a healthy meal before going out to collect all of that candy– Before you head out for some Halloween fun, be sure the whole family has a filling, healthy meal so you’re not tempted to fill up on all of the sugar about to come your way. For some festive Halloween dinner ideas, see the healthy Halloween recipes below!

Make trick-or-treating a fitness activity– Make a game out of hitting as many houses as you can on foot, or by bike! Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring water with you to stay hydrated throughout the evening.

Pumpkin Golf– Pumpkins can be more than just jack-o-lanterns! Get a few decorative pumpkins and make a festive game that can be used for years to come.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt– Set up a Halloween themed scavenger hunt for the kids to enjoy. Keep the hunt limited to inside the house, or make it a neighborhood activity by moving it outdoors.

Healthy Food Halloween match game– It’s never too early to teach kids how to eat healthy. Print out this free worksheet that teaches kids to differentiate healthy food from unhealthy food through a sorting game and let the fun begin!

Make a Maze– Have a little extra room in your yard? If so, try making your own version of a corn maze for the kids to run around in! Using caution tape or streamers and some stakes, get your kids up and moving by making a kid sized version of this fall favorite activity.
