Health Coaching Spotlight for National Wellness Month: Sam’s Story of Progress
August is National Wellness Month—a time to recognize the simple, everyday habits that lead to lasting health. Whether it’s drinking more water, getting outside, or checking in with a coach or friend, small steps add up, and having support and accountability through health coaching can make all the difference.
For Sam, a 30-something from the North Texas area, that support came through free virtual health coaching offered by our team. What began as an online search evolved into a transformation that reshaped his routines, mindset, and health.
“I am 33 years old, live in North Texas, and I got involved 2 years ago. I was looking for ways to be healthier and optimize my health. I’ve tried to be healthier before and had phases of trying to be healthy. I was in the process a few years ago of taking advantage of free resources available. It made a big difference to have someone to talk to. I didn’t have a roadmap or a companion on the journey before, and I wanted to have support.”
He first discovered our services through a friend working in a nonprofit.
“I had a friend in a nonprofit who offered financial coaching—I looked up free coaching online and Healthier Texas came up, and I was amazed that it was offered at no cost and easy to sign up.”
Sam quickly found value in the steady encouragement and accountability provided by our health coaches.
“Just the encouraging presence of the health coaches—the consistency of small steps—of goal setting weekly and figuring out ways to increase confidence to follow through with healthy steps… regular consistent check-ins… making a small plan each week for when to exercise or meal prep and help in making short-term goals.”
That steady rhythm of support helped Sam change habits that had long felt overwhelming.
“I was very reliant on eating out, especially fast food, and it affected my weight in an unhealthy range, cholesterol levels were in a bad range, the biggest culprit was sugar and processed foods… Health coaches helped set a goal for a weekly budget on fast food. I went from spending $100 a week to $35 a week, my siriasis cleared up, my cholesterol numbers improved and fell in a healthy range.”
With healthier meals and better planning, Sam noticed a ripple effect: more energy, better digestion, improved finances, and less caffeine.
“I’m eating a lot more vegetables and variety of produce, I have better energy levels, less caffeine intake, it has impacted my finances—I’m spending less on eating out, it’s impacted my severe acid reflux, which has improved with healthier eating almost 95%.”
Sam’s story is just one example of how preventative care works—and how access to free support can transform not only individual lives, but whole families and communities.
