SNAP-Ed: Building Healthy Recipes for Memorial Day Weekend
Healthy eating is important at every life stage, and Memorial Day weekend is typically a time when multi-generations of family members come together and enjoy a meal. Memorial Day weekend not only kicks off the end of the school year, but is also a time for us to give appreciation to those who have fallen in the armed forces.
The holiday is spent with family and friends outside, enjoying the upcoming summer season. When deciding what to serve at your event, we recommend you take a look at the SNAP-Ed MyPlate information as well as what’s fresh and in-season (or should be coming soon) at your local farmers market!
The goal behind the MyPlate program is to make every bite of your meal count. This means filling half of the plate with fruits and vegetables, a quarter of your plate with protein, and the other quarter filled with whole grains. This idea of a balanced plate can come in many forms, and you have plenty of options to choose from!
