How to Have a Happy & Healthy Halloween
Halloween is filled with costumes, trick-or-treating, and of endless amounts of candy. Unfortunately, over the years, a few pieces of candy have increased to eating hundreds in only one night. With this in mind, it is our mission to help you make this Halloween the healthiest one yet.
Costume parades are a fun way to bring together the community and keep your kids moving throughout the day. Walk around the block a few times with the kids to show off their costumes to friends and family. The kids can also help decorate the house with carved pumpkins, spider webs, and arts and crafts they create during the day. Some of our favorite arts and crafts include:
Other fun and festive activities to keep your kids active include:
- Monster Freeze Dance: Just like your regular freeze dance, but this time with your most frightening dance moves.
- Halloween Charades: A spooky twist on the classic game of Charades.
- Candy Corn Relay: Instead of eating the candy corn, use it for a relay race!
- Ghost Bowling: Draw ghost faces on cups or toilet paper and have the kids roll a ball to try to knock them down.
Another trick to prevent your kids from eating too many sweets is to keep them satisfied with healthy snacks. Here are some treats that are both healthy and haunting.
- Orange Jack-O-Lantern Fruit Cups: A healthy alternative to cupcakes and other sweets.
- Ghost Bananas: A simple snack to eat before trick-or-treating.
- Skeleton Veggie Tray: A silly way to incorporate some veggies into their day.
- Witch Guacamole Dip: A festive food that will satisfy their hunger with healthy fats.
- Apple Monster Mouths: A monstrously delicious snack featuring nutritious apples.
Instead of passing out candy, you can encourage everyone in the community to pass out healthy snacks like pumpkin seeds and raisins. Or, you can use Halloween-themed school supplies like pencils, erasers, spider rings, stickers, vampire teeth, and other dollar store favorites.
One final tip: Make sure the candy is in your sight, so you can keep track of how much everyone is eating. It’s important to keep health top of mind on this festive day, this way you’ll be sure to have a happy and healthy Halloween!
